About Andrew Cunningham
I’m a Social & Behavior Change (SBC) Advisor with 10+ years of experience working in international public health and nutrition programs across Africa, Latin America and Asia. I speak English, French and Spanish, and I thrive in fast-moving, cross‐cultural environments where meaningful behavior change and development outcomes matter.
Work Experience
2008-2009
2014 - 2023
2023 - Present
Peace Corps Madagascar — Community Health Volunteer
My journey in public health began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar, where I worked alongside local health workers to promote maternal and child health, nutrition, and hygiene in rural communities. Through community radio, counseling, and training-of-trainers workshops, I helped strengthen local capacity to deliver key health messages and fostered my early understanding of how community-led approaches drive sustainable behaviour change.
JSI Research & Training Institute — SBC Specialist and Advisor
During this period I supported large USAID-funded initiatives (including the Advancing Nutrition and SPRING projects) as an SBC practitioner, technical lead and program designer. I partnered with governments, local organizations and donors to design, implement and evaluate behavior change strategies that addressed undernutrition, maternal & child health, and nutrition-sensitive programming. I led teams, developed communication strategies and helped embed SBC into complex systems.
Independent Consultant
I transitioned to consultancy, working with organizations such as Action Contre la Faim, UNICEF, Food for the Hungry and other global actors. In this role I design SBC components, conduct assessments, deliver training, review and improve programming, and support proposals and implementation across multiple countries. My advisory focus is on leveraging behavioral science to drive sustainable outcomes in nutrition and public-health systems.

Where I've Worked
I’ve had the privilege to support country teams and partners in a wide range of contexts — both in-person and remotely — including:
Long-term technical support:
Burkina Faso, Guatemala, Honduras, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar
Short-term support:
Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, India, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal and Sierra Leone
These experiences have given me a strong appreciation for the diversity of cultural, institutional, and community dynamics that shape behavior change programming.

Why I Do This
I’m motivated by the potential of behaviour-change approaches to create meaningful and lasting improvements in health, nutrition and equity. Having worked in diverse settings, I’ve seen how even small shifts in habits, norms and systems can produce significant impact. I aim to bring a pragmatic, evidence-informed and culturally-sensitive approach to every project I engage in, making sure the people and communities we serve are at the heart of what we do.
